There are four main types of teeth: chisel-shaped incisors for chopping food, sharp canines for tearing food, diamond-shaped premolars with pits and fissures for grinding food, and rectangular molars which also grind food. As for the placement of teeth, the upper and lower teeth are the same. The two middle teeth are central incisors flanked on either side by lateral incisors, followed by canines, first and second premolars, and first, second and third molars on the extreme of both sides. Aside from chewing food, teeth have three other functions. First, they help in the pronunciation and articulation of sounds. Second, milk teeth are placeholders for permanent teeth and ensure that there is space for them to erupt. Lastly, teeth help maintain appearance and facial profile.
